Upper Ross The Good Soil Project

The Upper Ross Community Garden has been designed to be a meeting area and resource centre for locals who want to grow healthy organic herbs, fruit and vegetables in the garden and their own backyard.

As well as being a seed bank and living demonstration of the wide range of food plants that will grow in our climate, it is food waste recycling centre and outdoor classroom. The garden was designed to be low maintenance with an irrigation system and bio-wicking beds.

A wicking bed is not your average garden bed.  Which way does water flow? Up!  In a wicking bed because water moves from a reservoir at the bottom of the garden bed through the soil to the top, watering the roots of the plants from below. The water moves by ‘capillary action’ – just like fuel moving up the wick of a kerosene lamp.

Why a wicking bed?

• Wicking beds use up to 50% less water than conventional vegie gardens as less water is lost through evaporation.
• It’s low maintenance – plants have less risk of over-watering or under-watering.
• Plants get exactly the amount of water they need and their roots stay cool.
